Many users on LinkedIn focus on the total number of connections as a sign of being a good networker. Numbers are important, but in this day and age content is king in the online world.
As I said in my last post, once you have made a connection you need to keep active on LinkedIn in order to maintain your relevance as a valued member of someone’s network. So, here are some ideas on how to do this.
KEEPING YOURSELF RELEVANT ONLINE
1. Status Updates: tell other people what you are doing and change it frequently. Also, be sure to comment on the status updates of your connections.
2. Join groups and participate in discussions. Also, if you start a discussion, be sure to reply to anyone that leaves a comment directed to you.
3. Check out the Q&A section and see if you can provide some answers. This establishes you as a trusted resource and will help increase your total number of connections.
4. Provide recommendations as often as possible to people that you trust and respect. Recommendations are a big reason why LinkedIn is such a valued networking tool. Your connections will appreciate your kind words and your effort.
5. Ensure that if you write for a blog, you are sharing your posts through LinkedIn (i.e. wordpress application, or as a link in your profile)
6. Use applications like Google Presentation and Slide Share to display and promote some of the work you’ve done in the past. It will also serve as a way for you to help others working on similar projects.
These are a few things that I use, but I know there are others. What do you do to magnify your presence?
